BABIN, Mary Merina

Age 76, formerly of West Arichat, passed away peacefully at her residence in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home on January 30th, 2018. Merina was a devoted wife and proud mother and grandmother. She helped support her family by working as a housekeeper and by fishing alongside her husband Howard. She is well-remembered in her community for her beautifully decorated cakes that she created for weddings and for so many other celebrations. Merina loved gardening and flowers. She was a generous soul who loved to laugh and enjoyed being surrounded by loved ones.  In her earlier years, she was an active member of the West Arichat CWL. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Born December 28, 1941 in West Arichat, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Lorraine (Covin) DeCoste. She is survived by her husband Howard (Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, formerly West Arichat); daughter Claudette, Sydney, NS; son Glenn (Theresa), Grand Lake, NS; daughter Mona (Bonifacio Bertumen), Mississauga, ON; grandchildren: Remy, Braden and Josie; twin sister Lorraine (Carl) Landry, Sorel-Tracy, QC; half-sisters Agnes (Richard) Power, Mulgrave, NS; Donelda (Seward) Breen, Frankville, NS; Emilia DeCoste, QC; Clothilda Bourget, BC; half-brothers Alexander, West Arichat NS; Dennis, West Arichat NS; Bernard (Elisa), Glace Bay, NS. Besides her parents, Merina was predeceased by brothers Duncan and Napoleon. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation per family’s request. There will be a Celebration of Merina’s Life on April 22 on Isle Madame (details to follow). Donations can be made to the Diabetes Association of NS. Arrangements are entrusted to C.H.
