Obituary of Mary Frances "Francy" Hewings

It is with broken hearts, that we have to announce the passing of Mary Frances (Francy) Hewings.  A dedicated mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend to all who knew her. Born April 20, 1952 in Arichat, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Lawrence and Elizabeth “Betty” (Chisholm) Power. Her absence will be greatly missed by her son Neil DeCoste, Halifax; daughter Jessica Hyland (Simon), Arichat grandchildren, whom she adored, Grace Hass, Ophelia Hyland and Nash Hyland all of Arichat; brothers Greg Power (Karen), Pondville, Michael (Gassan) Montreal; sisters Elizabeth MacNamara (Alfred), Evanston, Winnie Bungay (Ed), Arichat, Joann Power (Pam), Portuguese Cove, Pat Rioux, Havre Boucher; she was also survived by step daughter Rachel Best (Steven); step grand daughter Georgia Best, both of England; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Theresa Power in infancy; 1st husband of 16 years, Peter DeCoste and 2nd husband of 21 years, Michael Hewings. Francy always gave of her time and of her heart. Her family was of the utmost importance to her and surrounding herself with them is what truly gave her joy.  Francy’s home was always a welcoming place. She loved to gather for celebrations, a sing song around the piano, great food and always a good card game. She lived her life as a devout Roman Catholic, who served as the organist for 50 years, beginning at the age of 15. She also served as a minister of Religious Education for several years. Her giving nature extended to her community, as she spent many years as a member and an executive member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 in Arichat and the Ladies Auxiliary. Francy began working as a secretary, with the Municipality of the County of Richmond in 1978 and transferred to St. Peter’s where she worked as a financial clerk for the Department of Social Services until her retirement in 2017. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9pm in C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home in Arichat. Funeral Mass will take place in Our Lady of Assumption Church in Arichat on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 11am, with Rev. Michel Exalant officiating. Burial to take place in Our Lady of Assumption Parish Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 150 in Arichat following the committal. Memorial donations can be made to the Strait Richmond Hospital Palliative Care Society.
