Marshall, Lillian Beatrice 83- Chapel Island

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Aunt, Lillian B. Marshall. She was predeceased by her parents, Noel and Annie Tena Marshall, her siblings, Mary Agnes, Martha Lucy, Peter Paul, Julia, George and Alexander.  She is survived by nieces and nephews, Sandra Merritt (Gilbert), Christine Flemming (John), Paul Lowry (Diane), Clayton Bernard, Ida Marshall(Rod), Gloria Marshall (Sergio), Gail Marshall (Fred), George Marshall, Robert Marshall, Daniel Marshall, Kimberly Julian (Bobby), and Krista Thompson.  Lillian had 35 Great nieces and nephews, and 27 great-great nieces and nephews.

Known to her beloved community of Chapel Island as “Miss Lilly”, she was considered a ‘Trailblazer’ with her passion and dedication to Potlotek. She was a highly sought after Mi’kmaq Elder, sitting on the UINR Elder Advisory Council and the Mi’kmaw Debert Elder Committee.  She was an active member of the Grand Council, and the prayer leader for Potlotek.   Miss Lilly was integral in the return of the French Alter to Chapel Island, as well as bringing back the Midwinter Feast in February.  Miss Lilly was an amazing story teller, a keeper of traditional knowledge, an academic researcher, celebrated Author, and Mi’kmaq Linguist. She holds degrees and certificates from Acadia, Mt. St. Vincent, St. Francis Xavier, Cape Breton University, and Nova Scotia Teachers College. Most recently,  Miss Lilly graduated from CBU in 2007. For over 40 years, Miss Lilly worked with the Potlotek Band Council, and just retired in April of 2017. She will be forever remembered for her love of miniku and all her relations.

Visitation will be held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Chapel, Chapel Island starting at 4pm on April 12th until 10:00am Saturday morning. Funeral mass will be held in St. Peter’s Catholic Church at 11 am on April 14th with Rev. Antolin Asor officiating. Salité will be held in Chapel Island Community Hall, Chapel Island following the mass. Internment will take place on Lapa’tko’tekemk (Pentacost Sunday) May 20, 2018 on Chapel Island.
