Obituary of Thomas Joseph Matthews

Matthews, Thomas Joseph "Tommy"- 76, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2014 in St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish with his loving family by his side. Born in Louisdale, he was the son of the late John Dougald and Irene Matthews. Tommy loved the outdoors, hunting, cutting wood, gardening and farming. His door was always open for a good cup of tea and a good laugh. Tommy enjoyed spending time at what was known as his home away from home (the farm).He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary; daughters, Debbie (Jimmy) Kempt Road, Clarissa (Bernard) River Bourgeois, Sheila (Wayne) Grand Anse, Audrey (Daniel) Dundee, Colleen (Paul) Fort McMurray; sons, Gerrard (Eileen), St. Georges Channel, Jerome, Halifax, Vince (Marion), Toronto, Terry (Sharon), Halifax, Dougald (Lydia) St. Peters, Tommy, Grand Anse, Hubert (Harriet), West Bay, Lawrence, (Nancy) and Martin, (Paulette), both of Grand Anse; 32 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Jean Marie (Joe), Susan (Valma), Edna (Eddie); brothers, Hubert (Marie), Carl (Rose), James, Sander (Rose Marie), and Eddie. He was predeceased by a daughter Edna; son Donald; sisters, Florence, Cassie and Loretta; brothers, Mattie, John, Arthur, Wallace, George and Charles. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at the Black River United Church in Black River on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 11:00 am with Minister Nan Carrigan, DM presiding. Burial will follow in the Black River United Church Cemetery, Following the committal a reception will be held at St. George's Channel Hall.
