Obituary of Joseph James Poirier

Poirier James Joseph (Jim) 82, of Louisdale passed away suddenly at his home on April 4, 2011 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born in Louisdale he was the son of the late Colin and Mary Alma (Landry) Poirier. He was the last surviving member of his family. Jim, an electrician by trade, helped build many homes as well as worked on industrial Union jobs in Halifax and the Strait Area for over 40 years. Jim was a talented self-taught musician who entertained local Dance Halls and Legions from the 50's to the 80's, leading his bands and entertaining crowds with his trumpet and saxophone playing. Jim was a keen observer of the political scene and was always up for an energetic and informed policy debate. Jim enjoyed retirement with his loving wife Patricia doing some traveling and spending time in Halifax and at their family home in Cape Breton, which he built when he was just 18 years old. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Patricia Ann (Power); his children , Debbie Malloy (Gordon) , Louisdale, Paul Poirier (Diane), Halifax , Sharon Babin (Blair), West Arichat, Andrea Maltby (Paul ), Hammonds Plains; and Michel Poirier (Heather) Riverview, N.B.; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grand children; sisters-in-law, Alma Poirier, Halifax and Edna Poirier, Louisdale; brother- in-law Joseph Power, Halifax, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Ernest and Arthur, step father Wilfred Landry. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A Funeral mass will be held in St. Louis Parish Church, Louisdale on Saturday April 16th at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial will follow in St. Louis Parish Cemetery.
