Obituary of Shirley Jane Hillier
It is with profound sadness that we anounce the passing of a beloved wife, mother/mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt and godmother.
Shirley Jane Hillier, 74, of Martinique died peacefully at the Strait Richmond Hospital in the early morning hours of February 26, 2019.
Born in Lennox Passage on Jauary 3, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Mary Dorothy (Forgeron) and Joseph Anthony Sampson (Joe "Obeline").
Shirley had many passions. She had a green thumb and loved to plant. She was so proud of her flowers, trees, and vegetables she planted every spring. Even when it was almost impossible for her to do, she peservered. She was an amazing baker and we all anticipated the "call" when she would have the homemade bread, baked beans or her chocolate cake with boiled icing done because we knew she would have a portion for each of us to share. Her generousity had no limits.
Although the last 20 years dealt her some devasting blows she tackled them head-on. She fought with unimaginable strength and determination. She fought, not just for herself, but for her family, especially for her loving husband of 53 years, Arthur. He was her rock, her pillar of strength. He never left her side, no matter what. He picked her up when she was down and kept her going when she wanted to give up. The love they shared was boundless and eternal. He was her anchor in life's ocean, they were best friends. Mom's love for her family came unconditionally. She never wanted, nor expected, anything but love in return.
She leaves behind a product of all that love, her four children. Brenda (Dean) Matthews, Grand Anse; Lisa (Leslie) David, Petit de Grat; Michael (Shelly), Port Hawkesbury; and Brian (Dulce),Vaughan,ON.
Her greatest joy in life was her five grandchildren, Megan, Caitlin, Seleena, Brandon, and Emma. She cherished the time spent with them. She adored and was so proud of them all.
She also leaves behind four siblings. Donna (Sidney) Short, Martinique; Etta Whyte, Poulamon; Edward (Sharon), Evanston; and Wayne (Claudine), Martinique. She leaves behind her special cousin Rosemarie (Hughie) McNamara, who thought of her like a mother. She has numerous neices, nephews, and cousins that will miss her immensely.
For the last 17 years that mom was on Dialysis, the nurses in the Dialysis Unit and the ER at the Strait Richmond became her second family. They took such great care of her and she came to adore each and every one of them. The Palliative Care team, Dr. Cooper and Nancy Cameron offered her comfort and support and for that we are eternally greatful.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitaion. Funeral services will take place March 29, 2019 at 11am in Our Lady of Assumption Church in Arichat with Rev. Michel Exalant presiding. Burial at a later date.
