Obituary of Newman Skinner
Please share a memory of Newman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our father Captain Newman Skinner, 84 years of age, that occurred at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish on October 18, 2022.
Born in Harbour Breton, NL, on December 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas and Dora Elizabeth (Pierce) Skinner.
Newman was a fisherman all of his life and years later became Captain of the Red Diamond Three, George Kentner, Bear Cove Point, and the Wind Breaker. He also owned his own lobster boat.
Our dad loved all his grandchildren and always held fond memories of spending time with them when they were younger and was also very proud of their accomplishments.
Our dad loved hunting, fishing, and playing pool, and enjoyed a great game of crib and talking about his many fishing and hunting adventuress in his own unique style. His favorite saying was "I don't boil cabbage twice". Music was a great big part of his life, and he enjoyed listening to Newfie, Acadian, and Country songs on the deck surrounded by his family and friends with his $5.00 “Ghetto Blaster”. – "best gift ever". Dad, we will miss watching the “Westerns” with you, CTV news, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. You always made the best boiled dinners ever(slap a piece of haddock on there), and also provided us with your many bottled lobster, herring, and mussels. We will forever miss your expressive blue eyes, beautiful smile with your flashy gold tooth, and fun-loving, and cranky ways too. Catch as many fish as you want in heaven dad, and enjoy a great meal with your brothers, George, and Bob. Have a glass of whiskey and don’t forget to tap twice. We will miss you dearly and home will never be the same.
He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia, of 59 years; daughters Florence Skinner, Bedford, Nancy Skinner, Cole Harbour (Lee), Frances Skinner (Chris Simmons) Fort McMurray; son Glen Skinner (Bobby), Regina; grandchildren Nicholas, Ashley, Christopher, Jessie, Marcus, Bryce, Matthew, and Cooper; great-granddaughter Brenleigh; sisters Emily Maurice, ONT, Shirley (Ross) Drew, Calgary, Ann Cahill, St. John’s, NL, Frances Pyke, Calgary.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers George and Robert; step-sisters Martha and Roseanne.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service per request. A Celebration of Life and burial will be held at a later date.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Doctors, Nurses, and staff at St. Martha's Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Antigonish for the excellent care that was given to our dad while he was in your care. It will never be forgotten.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C.H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., Arichat.
